The Illuminated Word:
Exploring Letter, Light and Life

2007 Artist Refuge Retreat
Sponsored by Rolling Ridge Meditative Arts
October 26-28, 2007
Friday Evening - Sunday Afternoon
Harpers Ferry, WV

From sacred scripture to modern day poetry the word has a way of illuminating meaning for our lives. A simple word or phrase can arrest our attention and open us to new awareness and creative expression. Witness the beautiful illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages and the creative ways artists today bring together text and image.

During our retreat we will explore the power of the word, allowing it to shed light on our lives. Through various creative exercises including writing, decorative lettering, and visual pattern and representation, we will delight in the illumination of God’s mystery that we are for each other.

Please bring a particular verse or poem that means a lot to you to share with the group.

Participants are welcome to arrive at the Retreat House between 5 and 7 pm on Friday night. Dinner will be served at 6:30. The retreat will conclude with lunch on Sunday.

Cost for the weekend is $100 (which includes materials, lodging, and meals). Space is limited. Please send a $25 deposit (or the full amount) to reserve your space. Checks should be made out to RRSRC and mailed to RRSRC, c/o Mar 07 Med Arts, 120 Jubilee Lane, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. Registrations should include any dietary or special needs.

The retreat will be led by Trish Stefanik, Mary Watters, and Linda DeGraf. For more information and to register see www.rollingridge.net or call / email Trish Stefanik at 304-724-1069 / tstefanik@aol.com.

11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Niles Cabin

This event offers an opportunity for those who want to capture images found in natural settings that bring inspiration and awe to the viewer. This is a day to experiment, sample, share and discuss images rather than a formal class involving photographic techniques. We will explore the opportunities that the woods, fields, ponds, streams, and trails of the Rolling Ridge property provide to capture the extraordinary grandeur and simple elegance of the natural world.

Location: Meet at Niles cabin at 11:00 am. We will finish at 3:00 pm. Lunch is available for $7.00. The event will be led by amateur nature photograher Lisa Payne. Call Sheila Bach at 304/728-4820 or email snbach@earthlink.net for more information.

Throughout his ministry, Jesus regularly took time to withdraw to a quiet place, to reflect and pray.

Retreat and rest is vital, and yet busy schedules often prevent us from setting aside the time we need.

We invite you to join us on the second Monday of each month for "A Day Away," a Sabbath day especially set aside for pastors and church leaders at Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community.

Rhythm of the Day

We will gather at the Retreat House at 10:00 a.m. for brief input, followed by your own time for prayer and reflection. Lunch will be served at noon. Retreatants may choose to leave at 1:00, or stay until 4:00 to hike the trails, sit quietly in the Meditation Shelter, get creative in the Art Cottage, or settle into a room to journal, rest or pray.

Second Mondays

"A Day Away" for pastors and church leaders will take place the second Monday of each month. The day is offered at no cost to attendees. Donations are accepted. Join us as often as you wish!

RSVP

Please let us know you will be attending by calling 304-724-6653 or emailing us at community@rollingridge.net. But if you forget to let us know in advance, come anyway!

10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Retreat House

We would like to invite you to join with the Rolling Ridge staff community for our annual work day retreat this labor day.

Can work together be a retreat?

We think so. That's why we often end this day of shared work with more energy and joy than when we began. As we work through the day, we are restored with good conversations, reconnection with others who love this land, a simple shared meal from the Rolling Ridge garden, singing together in the meditation shelter, and the delight of stretching and moving our bodies in new ways.

Shared work can be prayer together and a time that renews our soul. Join us at the Retreat House for this special day. Bring your work gloves and boots, and don't forget a joyful heart. We will provide a retreat house that needs to be cleaned, trails that need to be cleared, fire wood that needs to be cut, and land that needs to be loved.

Invite your friends. Please let us know if you are planning to come. You can call or e-mail us at the address given below.

With Dr. Lana Portolano
July 6-7, 2007
Friday evening - Saturday evening
Retreat House

This retreat continues a tradition of story retreats and lectures at Rolling Ridge by experienced practitioners who have shaped our understanding of story and human consciousness, including:

  • Biblical story telling
  • How the mind discovers meanings in dailing experiences by constructing stories
  • Therapeutic uses of story
  • How the coherence of our lives depends on stories which lace our thoughts and conversations every day

Lana is a writer of autobiographical stories and teacher in the master's in professional writing program at Towson University in Baltimore. Through several brief lectures and workshops she will help retreatants to recognize elements of story in our lived experiences and to construct a narrative that unlocks their meanings.

Lana has been on personal writing retreats at Rolling Ridge in order to write a memoir organized around her experience of adopting and parenting several Ukrainian daughters.

Join us for lively conversation around shared home-cooked meals, enlivening lectures and discussion, writing workshops, solitude and time for walking and doing your own creative writing. Lectures include Narrative Structure: How the Way We Talk Shapes the Way We Think, Story in Sacred Texts and Traditions, and Stories of Our Lives: Giving Body to Ideals.

Retreatants are welcome to arrive at the Retreat House any time after 4:00 pm in order to settle in or hike on the forest trails before dinner. Each retreatant should bring sheets or sleeping bag, pillows, towels and toiletries.

Registration fee for this retreat is $50. We want this retreat to be available for anyone with interest in creative writing, regardless of ability to pay. Scholarships are available for those who request it.
