Beyond Hope

Choosing Fierce Love in a Time of Catastrophe
Date:
October 13 - October 15, 2023
Time:
Arrive by 3:30 on Friday and depart by 2:30 on Sunday
Location:
Rolling Ridge Retreat House
Collage "Waking Up" by Doug Van Houten

NOTE: This event is full, except for one camping space. Please contact Lindsay if you have interest in that one camping space.  You can also use this online registration form to put yourself on the waiting list.

This is a retreat for those who yearn to move beyond the hope that we can fix the trouble we’re in as a species on this planet and instead choose a way to live with fierce love, surrendering to mystery amid the deep predicament in which we find ourselves.  In this retreat each will be invited to wander alone through the sacred land of Rolling Ridge listening for the wisdom of the wild inhabitants of forest, mountain and river.  There will be opportunities to share with one another our own stories of how we are living courageously as we stand on the edge of a world that is unraveling; as well as to listen to ancient stories that offer wisdom for our time.  We will participate in ceremony: including sitting in silence, chant, and sacred circle dance.

Retreat leaders Jim Hall, Cheryl Hellner, and Lindsay McLaughlin are longtime members and associates of Rolling Ridge Study Retreat.  They have apprenticed nature-based soul work through numerous programs for many years.

Cost of the retreat includes lodging, six meals, and program.

  • $350 – single occupancy (in any room)
  • $250 – register with a roommate and each pay $250.  We have two rooms with a full bed and three rooms with a bunk bed (two singles one over the other).
  • $200 – camp: experienced campers only. Bring your own tent and set it up in the woods near the Retreat House.  You will have access to facilities in the Retreat House.

The Retreat House is a family cabin in the woods.  Two bedrooms open off a foyer near the living room on the first floor. Five bedrooms open off a balcony/hallway on the second floor. Bathrooms are located at the end of the hallways and are shared.  There are two full baths (toilet, sink, shower), and two half baths (one with a toilet/sink, the other with an additional shower and a sink).

You will need to bring your own sheets, towels, and toiletries.

Rolling Ridge Study Retreat is located on 1500 acres of mountain wilderness about 6 miles south of Charles Town, WV.  Charles Town is the nearest town, a half-hour’s drive over a two-lane mountain country road.   The last mile to the Retreat House is over a one-lane gravel road with one or two somewhat steep sections (vehicles may pass each other carefully).  Directions.

The program will take place primarily outdoors.

The retreat is small.  We can have 12 retreatants.

Participants must send a picture of your vaccination card at the time of registration and take a self-test for COVID on the morning of October 13 and send a picture of a negative result.

Quote of the Day

In the tempestuous ocean of time and toil there are islands of stillness where humans may enter the harbor and reclaim their dignity. The sabbath is a designated day -- also a state of mind -- a time of detachment from things, instruments, practical affairs and the hurly-burly of life's struggles. In the sabbath state-of-mind we can seek attachment to the spirit, recapturing the goodness of our essential being.
